In my previous post, I explored the idea of self-publishing. After due consideration, I decided to take the plunge and learn as much as I could about it myself. It has been an interesting but steep learning curve for me. Not so much what I had to do or how I might do it, but the voice in my head saying, if a traditional publisher or agent is not banging down your door, then what makes you think this will be any better?
It wasn't about a better route. It was about believing in myself and the book's message of hope. The publishing world can challenge your sense of hope in ever getting your book out there. I think this is based on the triage system that chooses another book over yours. The sheer volume of manuscripts they receive in a week must be overwhelming. Publishers have a system to separate 'this from that'. Does that mean that you give up? No!
I have had my book professionally edited and formatted. I suggest doing this anyway before approaching an agent or a publisher. Get the book as polished as you can.
I am now working with a designer to create a book cover. This stage is important to me as I am a visual person, and like all writers, having a book to sell to readers becomes very real once you see the cover.
Don't let the system crush your dreams. If self-doubt comes up, question the validity of what the voice in your head is saying. Is it helpful? What would be more helpful? Change those thoughts for ones that will empower you to move forward. Take inspired action.
Honest writing is one of the most authentic exercises you will ever do. Use that strong anchor to navigate difficult times.
Don't give up. Just approach the problem from a different angle. There is more than one way to look at things. There is more than one way to get your message out there. There is more than one way to get published.
Open your eyes to the possibilities.
